The Postech Times sought the opinions of Professor EunJeong MA (BME) and Prof. Sungchul KIM (LIFE) on the medical potential of human gene editing, the appropriate scope, and ethical issues of its use. Before Editing Genes: Questions Beyond ScienceFor technologies such as gene editing, with profound social and clinical impact, we must consider the broader sociostructural values and implications. Historically, many technologies that emerged as medical or scientific innovations later sparked social debates about human identity, family, inequality, law and regulation, and even national policy.A rep

My first month at POSTECH can be measured in countless GS25 visits, dozens of awkwardly pronounced Korean phrases, and hours spent keeping up with the locals’ study rhythm. Leaving home at 18 and moving to a completely new country to study as part of POSTECH’s first international undergraduate cohort was absolutely bold of me. Yet in this short amount of time, I have experienced so many things that have changed how I view my surroundings and even myself.I still remember how, at 80% humidity and 34-degree heat, with my entire life packed into two suitcases, I was climbing the hill to reach the

We have been told that we should foster our creativity and originality, that we should be able to think outside the box, that we should value the process more than the result. However, does an exam consisting almost entirely of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) help us build the qualities we are told to possess? I doubt it. It asks us to choose one of the given answers, ignores the logical steps, and assesses us solely on the final answer. I believe that out of an obsession with objectivity and fairness, Korea is sacrificing quality in education.I spent my high school years in Geneva, Switzerla

As AI-driven autonomous laboratories transform the landscape of modern experimentation, The Postech Times asked Professor Sekyu CHOI (LIFE) and Prof. Jeongwook LEE (CHEM) to share their insights on the future of scientific research. What the Robot Arm Cannot See: A Human Side of Autonomous LaboratoriesA student asked after watching a robot laboratory video: “Professor, won't researchers eventually stop needing to run experiments by hand?” The technology is advancing. In my experience, even an arm running thousands of reactions a day halts at the most interesting discoveries and what happen

After two years in G-POS, POSTECH’s only game development club, I worked on many projects with the familiar faces from the club. While the other club members are amazing individuals, I strived to challenge myself further. This time, I wanted to take on a bigger challenge as well as gain new experiences. My first step was solo development, so I started by tinkering with a few ideas. However, I quickly hit several walls. Artist’s block, optimization problems, and a lack of fresh ideas made me realize I wouldn’t excel alone. I searched for collaborators who could complement my weaknesses, leading

This summer, I had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the five-day “2026 Climate Corps Summer School (CC26)” held at Korea University (KU) in Seoul. Participating from 49 universities across 28 countries, CC26 aimed to unite universities to co-generate practical, impactful solutions to the climate crisis, moving beyond mere knowledge sharing. The schedule was highly intensive, featuring faculty panel discussions, keynote speeches, site visits, and ideation culminating in a final pitch. Our group, Team 7, proposed a policy titled “The ‘Ohana Roadmap: A community-ownership pathway to

The Postech Times sought the opinions of Professor Victoria ELLIOTT (HSS) and Professor ROE Jung-hye (Seoul National University) on the operations of the newly established POSTECH Diversity Council. The Problem with “Diversity”Diversity: Not a passive collection of differences, but an active ongoing practice of connectionSome words describe the world. Others shape how we understand it. ‘Diversity’ is one of those words—and its meaning may be more complex than we assume. In everyday use, diversity is often reduced to difference: different backgrounds, identities, abilities, and ways of participa

When I returned to campus after shutting down my startup, the question I heard most often was, “Don’t you regret it?” To many people, starting a company looks cool. I thought so too. I had romanticized it—pulling all-nighters with a great team like the startups in films and dramas, watching an idea scrawled on a whiteboard grow into a product that changes the world, and growing explosively through that intensity. So I took the leap and founded a coding education platform. In the beginning, every day felt like a dopamine rush. Building the service, developing features, watching users respond—it

It was a short run, shorter than I might have expected when I first stepped into the role of editor-in-chief. To be honest, two years as a reporter had left me with the quiet conviction that there were no new things left for me as a reporter at The Postech Times. So when the editorial offer came, it arrived as a weight more than an exhilaration. I doubted whether I could handle this work well. But when it came down to it, I found myself repeating revisions for better typesetting and proofreading articles. What I realized was the weight of the title, Editor-in-Chief.Publishing news can feel lik

The Postech Times asked for the opinions of a professor and a student from an AI club (POSCAT) on whether AI chatbots can replace psychological therapyWhy Your AI Chatbot Is Not a Real TherapistCounseling used to be a uniquely human area, but that is no longer the case. In 2023, Stability AI’s CEO called GPT-4 the best therapist available, sharing that he uses it for his ADHD. Since then, more people have been turning to AI for psychological therapy.Even as the director of the POSTECH counseling center, I sometimes pour my frustrations out to an AI after a hard day. It never gets tired of list

Studying abroad at UC Berkeley was probably the most exciting experience I have undertaken during my time at POSTECH. The moment my acceptance email arrived, I was ecstatic. I was definitely looking forward to working on my laptop on Memorial Glade, soaking up the California sun, and visiting Silicon Valley. But getting ready for a semester abroad is less of a smooth algorithm and more of a complex systems engineering problem. Although I was incredibly grateful to be selected by the school through the Premium Outbound program, there were many more challenges awaiting me. Here is the slightly c

The week before midterms at POSTECH is usually a time of total academic immersion. Facing five exams, the logical choice for any student is the library. Yet, I chose a different path: boarding a flight to San Diego for the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Energy Innovation Summit. The ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit is the most influential event in the energy sector for transitioning cutting-edge science into real-world applications. It is where energy leaders gain early access to groundbreaking energy technologies, define new areas of scientific research, and drive the develop

The Postech Times asked for the opinions of an alumna and an undergraduate student to provide advice for Postechians struggling to balance GPA management and diverse experiences. It Takes Quiet Courage to Embrace Our Imperfections, and Humble Wisdom to Acknowledge Our Togetherness In the world-famous novella The Little Prince, there is a scene that many of us may remember:Grown-ups love figures. When you tell them about a new friend, they never ask about essential matters. They never say to you, “What does his voice sound like? What games does he love best? Does he collect butterflies?” Instead

“Have you thought about it thoroughly?” was what I heard the most when I told people that I registered to be an organ donor after death, followed by “Maybe you should consider cancelling your registration.” Although the reason I told people was not to receive praise, but to inform them to donate my organs before cremation, I have to admit that such negative responses were discouraging.Donating blood is another story. I have donated a total of seven times after I turned 16 and became eligible. Unlike my organ donor registration, most people supported my blood donation journey, seeing it as a “b

On Jan. 14, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced strengthened R&D cooperation with the Netherlands in the fields of semiconductors and quantum technologies. As global technological competition intensifies, rapid changes in policies and supply chains are increasingly affecting academia. Against this backdrop, this article brings together the views of Professor Byoungdon KONG (EE) and Prof. Sunkyu LEE (SEMI) on the future direction of university research labs in semiconductor and quantum technologies.Intellectual Diversity in an AI-embedded society (Prof. KONG)As artificial intel

Every time vacation approaches, I find myself facing the same question: “What should I do during this vacation?” I often debated whether to get a license or study English, but this year, I decided to try something different—learning how to ski. I signed up for the winter session ski program. This program, which runs for four days and three nights at High1 Ski Resort, includes a 24-hour lift pass, meals, and accommodation, all for 150,000 KRW. Personally, I felt it was a great value for the cost. Some people might hesitate to sign up because they worry, “Can I really do this well?”, but you don’

This winter, I had the extraordinary opportunity to step beyond that distance and walk through the halls of the UN Headquarters in New York as part of the 17th College Leaders at the UN (CLUN) delegation. Our team worked under the framework of SDG 13: Climate Action, and I had the responsibility of serving as team leader. Together, we developed a policy proposal titled Planting the Seeds to Greener Agriculture: Leading the Global Transition with Punjab’s Sustainable Cultivation as the COP33 Agenda. We dissected the agricultural structure of India’s Punjab state, its reliance on water-intensive

The Postech Times sought the insights of a professor and a student on a working holiday to explore the merits of staying the course versus stepping away for personal growth. Is Not Taking a Leave of Absence Also a Credential?Working every day with POSTECH students, I am often struck by how carefully they think about making the “right” choices. Conversations about leaves of absence come up often, and they are frequently wracked with anxiety. Students think hard over internships, exams, health, motivation, and future plans. Many of these decisions are made with extreme care and enormous deliberat

Hello. I am PARK Seoyeon from Elite League Season 3, also known as University War. By appearing on the show, my attitude toward life changed beyond the experience of solving difficult problems. The countless choices I had to rapidly make—and the results that followed—made me look back on the standards I had been acting upon. In a way, this article is a record of what I felt through that experience and the attitude I have resolved to change. My motivation for applying to the Elite League was simply because I was a huge fan of the show. I came across a University War video after the 2025 CSAT. I

From Jan. 27 to 30, the 33rd Korean Conference on Semiconductors (KCS) was held. This year’s theme, “A Paradigm Shift in Semiconductors for AI Era,” focused on the future direction of Korea’s semiconductor industry in the AI era. I participated in KCS for two main reasons: to present my research at the undergraduate poster session and to explore various research fields while networking with others at one of Korea’s largest semiconductor conferences. Sharing My Research at the Undergraduate Poster SessionSince the fall semester of 2025, I have been conducting research in a semiconductor device
