On Sept. 2, a report published by the United Nations Environment Programme officially acknowledged that exceeding the 1.5°C threshold under the Paris Agreement is virtually inevitable. This warning provides a clear rationale for why higher education institutions must accelerate their transition toward sustainable campuses.
POSTECH has actively led joint efforts with other universities such as the joint declaration of the “Sustainable Campus Initiative” alongside Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University. This declaration goes toward daily administrative decision-making across campus, such as furnishing the POSTECH President’s Office with second-hand furniture and adopting paperless practices for major meetings and reports. Also, the university fosters a campus culture where Postechians naturally experience and practice eco-friendly values in their daily lives.
Unlike other major universities that have published annual sustainability reports to disclose their ESG achievements, POSTECH faced realistic and structural limitations that prevented it from issuing an official report. Although POSTECH monthly publishes electricity and water consumption data following a decision by the Energy Management Committee in 2014, this remained insufficient to capture the broader achievements. Staff members at each office have multiple responsibilities, so it is difficult to collect and integrate data scattered across various departments into a single framework. The Office of Planning noted that before publishing the integrated sustainability report, it is essential to establish internal standards and management indicators to define what values POSTECH pursues.
To overcome these limitations, POSTECH has been building a control tower and administrative system for a sustainable campus. Rather than immediately creating a separate dedicated department, the Office of Planning took charge of Sustainable Campus Building and Execution. In addition, the university established the Sustainable Development Committee chaired by President Seong Keun KIM, followed by the creation of three subcommittees for Environment, Social Contribution, and Ethical Management. Furthermore, in alignment with its POSTECH 2.0 initiative, POSTECH established its ESG vision of “A Global Value-Creating University Leading a Sustainable Future.” Rather than immediately publishing a traditional sustainability report, POSTECH is currently focusing on establishing a foundation to systematically manage and release sustainability data.
A sustainability report is not a mere promotional brochure. It is a vital communication tool to transparently share a university’s climate action and ESG value creation processes with internal and external stakeholders. When daily eco-friendly practices by university members and transparent data disclosure create a positive impact, POSTECH will fulfill its social responsibility as a leading sustainable campus and set a positive benchmark for future society.
