On Jan. 20, The Postech Times visited Kyoto University to explore its academic culture. The university is guided by the motto “Jiyū no Gakufū”, meaning “free academic spirit.”
This philosophy encourages students and professors to pursue research freely, with a focus on independence and creativity. Instead of rigid systems, Kyoto University promotes self-directed learning and open collaboration.
As a result, scholars communicate across disciplines and interests, contributing to many scientific breakthroughs. This spirit remains central to daily life on campus.
During our visit, we observed how this culture is reflected in interactions and research environments. “Jiyū no Gakufū” is not just a motto, but a lived academic tradition.
This article is the final part in our series on Kyoto University.
