Could you introduce the POSTECH Future Intelligence Academy (FIA)?
POSTECH Future Intelligence Academy is an educational institute for citizens that encompasses fields of humanities, society, arts, and sciences.
FIA has made a fresh start from the POSTECH Institute for Civic Educations (PICE) last summer. Could you explain the meaning of the new name and the motivations for this change?
For five years after its foundation, “civilization” and “citizens” were the keywords that have centered our programs. From now on, however, we will focus on “future” and “intelligence.”
While “civilization” was a keyword that reflects on the mental and physical products that have repeatedly progressed from the beginning of human history to the present, “future” is a keyword that looks ahead to an entirely new world that will be presented to us in the future, hopes, challenges, opportunities and crisis it will present to humanity.
“Citizens” was a concept that emphasized the ethical values and moral attitudes that each individual should rightly pursue in a society. “Intelligence,” on the other hand, is a concept that emphasizes professional knowledge and rationality of value-neutral judgment.
We also renamed the “institute for education” to an “academy,” as “education” is an activity that clearly distinguishes learners from teachers. Over many years, we have learned a lot not only from lecturers but also from audiences. Hence, we chose the name “academy” to present the possibility of open conversation and questions.
Could you introduce various programs POSTECH Future Intelligence Academy offers?
Future Intelligence Masterclass invites renowned lecturers to share stories about their life and philosophy. It aims to enrich lives of on-campus and local communities with lectures continued on a topic that FIA selects each semester.
Future Exploration Forum provides an opportunity for networking and understanding of the latest digital technology trend to POSTECH members to play a leading role for developing future technologies and solving social problems. It offers an opportunity to interact with experts in future technologies and creates a lasting community.
FIA FRIENDS partner with FIA to spread knowledge of humanities, society, and arts. FIA FRIENDS participate in lecture programs of FIA and write reviews from diverse perspectives. Now in February, we are recruiting 4th members of FIA FRIENDS to join us for 2025. You can apply via our FIA website or via QR codes on posters attached on campus by Friday, Feb. 21.
What is the ultimate goal that FIA aims to achieve through these programs?
FIA aims to bridge academic inquiries and intellectual research of the university with the local community by breaking down the boundaries between the two, and to enable mutual communication by enhancing diversity and creativity of POSTECH members. Remarkable knowledge, impressions of life, and wisdom shared here will make you dream of an imaginary world that will bring innovations and a better future.
