The First POSTECH AutumnFest (PAF) was successfully held on Oct. 2. During the prior evening, a German Film Screening Night held at ChangeUp Ground showing “Goodbye, Lenin!” and “The Lives of Others.” Meanwhile, the Culture Muncher was held during lunchtime as a pre-event and aroused anticipation for the German-themed festival. German food, made by PBUD and international exchange students, was served for free. Postechians could enjoy German foods including Kartoffelpuffer with Gluwein, Knodel in Pilzsobe and SauerKraut, and Bienenstich.
Most programs, including pre-events, operated based on pre-registration and used English. Student Affairs organized the entire event, by working in collaboration with PBUD. For participants, each event provided a lucky draw. The most anticipated gift was a round-trip ticket to Germany. PAF focused on three main themes: science education, communication, and culture. While focusing on these themes, PAF aimed to maximize the link between various on-campus members.
PAF started with a special lecture “Understanding Germany” by Anton Scholz. It took place at ChangeUp Ground media hall. An interesting story in his fluent Korean captured Postechian’s minds. After the lecture, the “Golden Bell Quiz: The Heart of Europe” proceeded. Participants were organized into teams including one Korean student and one international student. For fair competition, students who had experience studying in Germany were restricted from participating. The various types of questions encouraged discussion between international students and Korean students. Talk Concert let Postechians hear about education in Germany. After the short performance by Hanulrim, Mr. Martin Kasperek from the German embassy told the story of German life in general and in education. For a closer view, Moritz Haid (Germany, TUM) and Daniel Garcia (Austrian, TU Wien) shared their experiences of student life in Germany. Choi Taekyu (PAL) shared his study abroad experience, and Kim Chaewon (POSTECH) highlighted the difference from Korea.
The Networking Festival started spectacularly with a grand performance by a musical quartet as well as Blue Peanuts. German beer, sausages, and nachos were served for free. While students were enjoying a beer with the sunset, there was a congratulatory message from our school President Seong Keun Kim. The lucky draw continued to encourage students’ expectations while the photo booth captured valuable moments.
The last scene was the New World Philharmonic Orchestra Concert by conductor Gum Nanse. Many residents of Pohang visited POSTECH to watch the open concert at POSTECH Central Fountain. The most impressive point was the conductor’s endeavor to earnestly communicate with people. He used humor, additional explanations, and the involvement of the audience to share classics.
As the 2024 PAF successfully ended, the main theme and country of next year’s PAF are already drawing attention. For the succession of PAF, it is important to adhere to the original purpose: networking between school members and exposure to various cultures. Sustaining support and participation will make PAF POSTECH’s representative festival.
