This winter vacation, The Postech Times visited Taiwan under a reportage mission. This reportage was conducted with the aim of establishing a network, between industrial and academic institutions, to cultivate international competence in entrepreneurship. On Jan. 18, we visited one of Taiwan's most innovative companies, TSMC, to explore their successful business models, and later visited the National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT) to participate in an entrepreneurship-themed workshop. Our reportage will be published over two issues, starting with TSMC.

Dr. Morris Chang, the founder of TSMC, noted Taiwan’s strength in industry, started his own business by becoming the only manufacturer among the three sectors of the semiconductor industry: design, manufacture, and sales. The company succeeded in a business model called foundry and became not only one of the most important companies in Taiwan’s economy, but even in the global semiconductor. Furthermore, their innovation gave rise to another exceptional idea. While they were becoming a manufacturer, many companies could only focus on conceptual design, however TSMC put their own innovation quickly into practice. By doing so, they lowered the barriers to innovation, leading to co-growth with collaborators such as NVIDIA and Qualcomm. Even now, they are still trying to be dynamic under their own mission “To be the trusted technology and capacity provider of the global logistic IC industry for years to come.” When asked how much they expected to meet future demand, they expressed confidence that they were working to meet 100 percent of future demand. During our reportage, we could find how their smart, but unfamiliar, business model succeeded and what future they were dreaming of.
