Next year, multiple modifications in student dormitories will take place in 2023. The biggest change will take place at dormitories 20 and 21, also called Residential College (RC). RC was first introduced in English universities like Oxford and Cambridge, and after its establishment in POSTECH in 2008, all freshmen and sophomores were required to stay in the RC. Apart from its primary role of being a place for students to stay, different academic activities led by Residential Advisors (RA) have taken place to provide academic guidance and character improvement which will ultimately elevate academic competence.
The greatest change is in the regulations for the RC. Next year, RC will only consist of Dormitory 21. The 2nd to 8th floor will be occupied by male students and the 9th to 13th floor for female students. Until now, the first two floors of Dormitory 20 were occupied by male freshmen and the third and fourth floor were for female graduates. There are a total of 303 rooms for undergraduate students in the RC, along with rooms for disabled students and rooms for RC Advisors (RA), which is less than the projected number of first and second years in 2023. In 2022, 346 rooms were provided, and thus 86 students need to be relocated to different dormitories. Student Union of Mueunjae Undergraduate Studies sent out an email to freshmen in October 2022, with a google form asking whether any student wanted to live outside the RC next year. From now on, the Student Union of Mueunjae Undergraduate Studies will send out a google form to freshmen asking them to choose whether they would like to live in the RC or out of the RC during their sophomore year. If too many or too few people apply, then the Student Union of Mueunjae Undergraduate Studies will run a lottery to choose the students that will stay in the RC and those that will stay outside of the RC. Students staying out of the RC can choose whether they will stay at other dormitories on campus or stay off campus. The Student Union of Mueunjae Undergraduate Studies is expecting improvements in efficiency in operation and education followed by overall satisfaction.
Another change that is currently taking place is the change in Dormitory 19. POSTECH has started renovations in a different dormitory to improve the facility level throughout campus. Reconstruction for the Graduate Apartment finished in the Summer of 2022, and currently, Dormitory 19 is under construction. In the second semester of 2022, Dormitory 19 was used as a place for students to stay during quarantine. Now, POSTECH has announced its plans for reconstruction to change the structure of rooms and other facilities. Along with Dormitory 19, one of the female Dormitories is currently under construction. The current announcement states that the construction will take place during winter break. Due to this, some female students staying on campus during winter break were required to apply to stay in Dorm 8, usually used by male students, during the 2-month interval.
Although constant renovations on campus bring inconveniences for the students, they are taking place to improve student lives and overall experience on campus. Students are advised to be aware of the changes taking place.
