University festivals are large annual social events that have established themselves as an integral part of university culture. The Sunrise Festival is the name given to POSTECH’s annual festival and due to the pandemic, the school has been unable to host the event over the last three years. Notwithstanding the loosened social distancing measures and the decline in daily COVID-19 cases, the school withheld the decision to host this year’s Sunrise Festival – and also because there was not a suitable candidate to lead the so-called Sunrise Festival Organization Committee. The majority of the current undergraduates have not had the experience of organizing and enjoying the Sunrise Festival. Fortunately, the school settled on a compromise and decided to host POSTECH Culture Day.
This year’s POSTECH Culture Day(s)  went on from May 12 to May 13 and was full of action, performance, and food. The festival was perhaps even more special because, like opening the valve to a chock-full water tank, it was the first post-pandemic large social event that, at last, quenched Postechians’ thirst to socialize – a thirst that had not been satisfied for a long time. All in-person lectures temporarily transitioned to online for the following week after the festival as a preventative measure to avoid the spread of the virus that might have been triggered by the large social gathering. Thankfully, there has not been any significant widespread transmission as the number of daily cases has remained stable. The successful festival and the absence of a widespread virus transmission symbolized the end of social distancing and the pandemic itself.
The parking lot by the 78-stairway was where the main events took place. The main stage was equipped with an array of flashy laser lights and aggressive flamethrowers that breathed fire from underneath, all of which made a dynamic spectacle. The performances were diverse as much as they were of high quality. Ranging from the orchestra, blues, hip/hop, and rock, they never ceased to bore the audience. What was even more impressive was that they were all Postechians with an equal amount of workload and responsibility as everyone else. A bit off from the main stage was the student club fair where a total of 22 booths offered a wide range of activities from making Dalgona like in Squid Game, Photobooth, and Face Painting. There were also sports tournaments during the day, mesmerizing fireworks in the evening, and a romantic stormy-hill film festival at night. The members of the 11 student clubs who delivered a fabulous performance and the members of the POSTECH Student Club Union who organized this successful event all deserve a special mention for their incredible effort. Seeing the lively campus filled with energy and young blood gave a little taste of what campus life is supposed to be like.
