On Sep.17, Typhoon Sanba had a disastrous effect on Pohang. Postechians who had morning classes from 8 A.M. were in a dilemma regarding whether to attend class or not. Although students attempted to block the rain with their umbrellas, the ferocious wind snapped the umbrellas, making them obsolete. As the typhoon grew stronger, students pleaded with their professors to cancel classes. Students even posted on the school bulletin board questioning whether one day’s classes were worth more than students’ safety. To the students’ relief, several classes were canceled. It is unfortunate, however, how afternoon classes were canceled although the weather had become relatively calm by that time. The strong wind and heavy rain uprooted trees, flooded roadways, and caused roofs to leak. For the students’ convenience, the Science War Preparatory Committee distributed raincoats for free at the Student Union Building.
