With the arrival of a new year, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) stands at a significant milestone. The new year marks the 40th anniversary of POSTECH: a university that–despite its relatively short history–has played a monumental role in shaping South Korea’s scientific and technological landscape.
Founded in 1986, POSTECH was established by the then Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO)’s Educational Foundation with a clear and ambitious goal of building an international, research-oriented university focused on science and technology. From the day of its birth, the university was designed to prioritize depth over size, concentrating resources on a small number of students and faculties to pursue excellence in education and research.
POSTECH welcomed its first class in March 1987, admitting 249 undergraduate students across nine departments: mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials and metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, computer science, and chemical engineering. One year later, the university expanded into the life sciences and opened its graduate programs, signaling its early commitment to the world of advanced research.
Institutional growth continued steadily through the 1990s and gained national recognition in 1997 when it was selected as an outstanding institution for educational reform. In 1995, POSTECH became fully independent from POSCO, instead operating under the Pohang University of Science and Technology Foundation, a separate legal entity. While the foundation remains one of POSTECH’s major shareholders, the company has no direct involvement in academic or administrative decisions, granting POSTECH academic autonomy and allowing it more substantial financial growth.
Despite its modest student body, POSTECH quickly earned a global reputation. In 2010, it ranked 28th worldwide in the Times Higher Education Rankings—an extraordinary and prestigious feat for a university less than 25 years old at the time. It later topped international rankings for universities under 50 years old for multiple consecutive years. POSTECH consistently ranks among the top universities in Korea across major global rankings in science and engineering.
POSTECH has consistently produced outsized results: it operates more than 120 research centers, publishes thousands of internationally recognized papers, and files hundreds of patents each year. Its faculty and researchers have played leading roles in fields ranging from materials science and physics to artificial intelligence and biotechnology. Large-scale national research infrastructure, including advanced particle accelerator facilities, has further elevated its global standing.
Looking ahead, POSTECH enters its fifth decade not just as a witness to history, but as a pioneer at the frontiers of innovation and a dazzling embodiment of academic excellence itself. As it has demonstrated time and time again, the university will remain dedicated to solving global challenges and nurturing the pioneers of the future who will define the next 40 years.
