As winter approaches, it is time to prepare outerwear and embrace the changing season. On campus, winter is already beginning to settle, bringing cooler air, shorter days, and a calmer atmosphere. For a cozier experience outside the city, winter festivals in Busan offer a chance to enjoy the season up close. Pohang is only about an hour and a half away from Busan by intercity bus, making the city a practical destination for a short winter escape.

The centerpiece of Busan’s winter celebrations is the Busan Fireworks Festival, which will take place Saturday, Nov. 15 (Sat), at 7 P.M., along the coastal stretch of Gwangalli Beach. The 20th-anniversary show is expected to showcase large-scale pyrotechnics synchronized with music and colorful light effects over the Gwangan Bridge. It will be crowded with visitors trying to secure good viewing spots, and heavy traffic is expected from the afternoon, so early arrival is recommended.

For those unable to attend on the day of the main fireworks, the Gwangalli Marvelous Drone Light Show presents an alternative attraction. The show is held every Saturday at 7 P.M. and 9 P.M. and features different themes each week, offering returning audiences diverse experiences. Drones light up the sky above the beach, forming recognizable imagery inspired by seasonal motifs and local stories.

Meanwhile, the Seomyeon Light Festival adds brilliance to Busan’s bustling central district. Running from mid-October through mid-February, the festival has expanded to a 1.8-kilometer stretch along Seomyeon 1st Street. Along the route, illuminated installations create photogenic spots, including an arch-shaped light gate near Seomyeon Rotary, balloon sculptures of the district mascots Baekyang Grandpa, Hocheon Cat, and a Christmas tree. Each zone features a unique artistic theme, which allows visitors to enjoy a sequence of different atmospheres while walking the street. Interactive elements—such as a Polaroid photo event, media façade shows, and a wish-ribbon program—enhance engagement and participation.

For a practical one-night, two-day itinerary, travelers can arrive in Busan on the afternoon of the festival, enjoy either the fireworks or the drone show, then spend the next day exploring Seomyeon. Since the drone show does not take place on the night of the fireworks festival, choosing one event simplifies planning. With the metro connecting Gwangalli and Seomyeon, transportation between attractions is both easy and efficient. Visitors are advised to check public transit schedules and consider early travel to avoid congestion.

Busan’s coastal districts also offer scenic views beyond the festivals. At night, the shoreline presents reflections of bridge lights and city towers across the water. In addition, cafés and restaurants along the beach often provide heated seating areas that allow guests to enjoy winter scenery while staying warm. Jeonpo Café Street, located near Seomyeon, creates a festive atmosphere during the season with decorations and independent shops that give travelers opportunities to relax between activities.

A short winter trip to Busan offers the chance to escape a crowded daily routine and experience a vibrant seasonal atmosphere. The combination of winter lights, ocean views, and accessible transportation creates an inviting path for those seeking warmth despite dropping temperatures—how about joining in and making this winter a memorable one?
