On July 17, POSTECH officially declared its vision of becoming Korea’s first AI-Native University by signing a MOU with Microsoft Korea at the company’s headquarters in Seoul. This initiative goes beyond simply adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies; it represents a monumental attempt to reorganize the entire university system—admissions, education, research, and administration—around AI.

“While other universities may apply AI in certain areas, POSTECH is integrating it across the entire academic ecosystem, from admissions to graduation,” said President Kim Seong-keun. “Our goal is to establish a new global standard for a future university where humans and AI truly collaborate.” This ambitious vision is the culmination of years of preparation. Since 2023, POSTECH and Microsoft have been building the foundation for a full-scale partnership. Last year, the university adopted Microsoft 365, a comprehensive suite of cloud-based productivity and collaboration tools, and greatly expanded its cloud storage. Building on that groundwork, POSTECH launched its AI Committee on July 8 to spearhead the strategy, leading to the MOU nine days later.

The AI-Native University program will transform three key domains: education, research, and administration. In education, personalized AI tutors will analyze student learning patterns and deliver real-time feedback, with multilingual support making the system more accessible for international students. In research, Microsoft’s Azure platform will power advanced data analysis, literature review, and coding, allowing researchers to focus on creative thinking rather than repetitive tasks. In administration, routine processes like document preparation and scheduling will be automated to maximize institutional efficiency.

POSTECH is committed to becoming a world-class hub for educational and research innovation. Beyond simply adopting new systems, POSTECH plans to strengthen its collaboration with Microsoft, other global IT companies, and leading international research institutions. By aligning with Korea’s national AI strategy and expanding joint research in AI and next-generation fields like quantum computing, POSTECH aims to lead the development of future advanced technologies.

AI-Native University presents students with both new learning environments and challenges. President Kim emphasized, “AI is no longer optional but essential. However, human insight and sincerity cannot be replaced. Students must view AI not as something to fear or blindly trust, but as a collaborator, and they should design their own futures with creativity and passion.”

The POSTECH–Microsoft partnership signals not just a technological collaboration but a fundamental paradigm shift in university operations. By embedding AI into the core structure of the academic ecosystem, the AI-Native University initiative is expected to mark the starting point for higher education of Korea to carve out a new path in the global race for AI-driven innovation.
