And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful- Alessia Cara, “Scars to Your Beautiful”
Initially, I wasn’t drawn to journalism. In my mind, journalism was a fixed field with little to no room for personal perspective. I wanted to speak my thoughts instead of just writing the same facts as every other reporter, so I thought journalism was not for me. That changed as I read articles by The Postech Times and realized reporters could also be voices for change.
The Postech Times is one of the largest platforms in POSTECH where one can share one’s voice, and I would like to use mine to make a difference. As we can tell from the “GLOBAL POSTECH” windbreaker jackets seen around campus, POSTECH aims for Postechians to become global leaders who spark change. And to become someone who sparks change, one must be open-minded and willing to see different sides of society.
I aspire to write in a way that makes the reader reconsider their views on society, empathize with the social minority, and use their voice to demand change. Despite Artificial Intelligence (AI)’s rapid growth, I believe journalism is one thing that it cannot wholly replace. AI can be easily influenced by its developers or societal biases, which could result in AI journalism overlooking stigmatized subjects for which the general public does not care.
As a writer and reporter, I aim to advocate for people who cannot advocate for themselves. I intend to show society how we sleep on critical topics that we can’t ignore. Society tends to hide uncomfortable truths. People often avoid talking about discrimination, segregation (whether intentional or unintentional), and prejudice. It is my duty to share the issues we must discuss for society to progress.
Being selected as a reporter and having the opportunity to write for such a large platform is truly an honor. I am determined to use this opportunity to write meaningful articles and connect with the audience. I am here today because there were people who supported me. Now, I want to be that same source of support for others through words because that’s the way I know best.
The world can change its heart. I hope to shed light on underrepresented voices to make people feel seen and heard.
