On Nov. 18, the main round of the 12th Gwamagi Startup Expedition program was held in the POSCO International Center. The Gwamagi (acronym in Korean for Very Fun Tech Start-up Competition) Startup Expedition is an annual competition in which participants come up with technological startup ideas and present them to an audience. All Postechians and others who are interested in entrepreneurship were welcome to participate, along with participants of various startup-aid projects such as the Korean I-Corps or INNOPOLIS Campus.
The competition consisted of a preliminary round and the main round. During the preliminary round, participants were required to submit their idea proposals along with their presentation materials. The bootcamp for various educational sessions was also held simultaneously, with at least five compulsory mentoring sessions with a dedicated mentor for each team, during which verification and advancement of startup items was conducted. Additionally, non-compulsory, basic education was provided on business models as well as presentation skills to persuade potential investors. Of the many participants in the preliminary round, only 10 teams were able to proceed to the main round, which was held on Nov. 18.
The main round began with the introduction of the evaluation committee, and the simulated investment program. Next came the actual presentations by the participating teams. All teams gave their best and proposed various innovative ideas for technological startup business models. The event eventually ended with the announcement of the prize winners and raffle draws of various prizes.
The grand prize of 10 million KRW from the President of POSTECH, was awarded to the Ecotect team, who proposed a startup based on producing internal insulation materials for sandwich panels using mushroom mycelium and used-up coffee grounds. Next, the highest excellence prize from the head of the POSTECH Research and Business Development Foundation was awarded to the PIFE (Post It Film Electronics) team. Also, the excellence prize, a total of 5 million KRW from the chairman of POSTECH Holdings was awarded to the KardiUS and SISU teams (2.5 million KRW) each. Aside from the main prizes, there was a simulated investment program in which participants attending the event could participate in an investment simulation, where the results were gathered and the top investment team, the KardiUS team, was awarded the popularity prize.
