Gum Nan-se concert

On Nov. 29 at 19:30 P.M., a famous conductor, Gum Nan-se, and the New World Philharmonic orchestra performed at the POSTECH auditorium as a celebration for POSTECH’s 32nd anniversary, and as part of the 2018 POSTECH cultural program. The performance was open admission.
The conductor Gum Nan-se is one of the most beloved composers in Korea and is known as the father of the popularization of classical music. The goal of the performance was to break the stereotype that classical music is difficult and that it is only for a high-brow audience, and to show that classical music concerts can be enjoyed by anyone through Gum’s uniquely fun and comprehensible interpretation of classical pieces.
The list of pieces performed by the orchestra is as follows: Light Cavalry Overture composed by Suppe, ‘O babiini mio caro’ from the Opera composed by Puccini, ‘Je veux vivre’ from the Opera composed by Gounod, Dance of the Comedians composed by Smetana, ‘Largo al factotum della citta’ from II Barbiere di Siviglia composed by Rossini, ‘Chamson du Toreador’ from the Opera composed by Bizet, Pequena Czarda composed by Iturralde, and Symphony No.4, 4th movement composed by Tchaikovsky.
The concert was in collaboration with Hwang Dong-yeon (saxophone player), Yun Jeong-bin (soprano), and Seong Seung-uk (baritone). Hwang is a 17-year-old musician who won a grand prize from 2017 ‘Nado Star Audition Concert’. Yun is a soprano who graduated from Seoul National University department of vocal music. Yun placed first in the Korea Voice Competition (concours) and in other concours such as ‘U.Sacchetti’ and ‘Zucchelli’. Seong graduated from the Yonsei University department of vocal music as a valedictorian and went to the British Royal Academy of Music with a full scholarship and graduated as a valedictorian, receiving the Queen Elizabeth Award.
