“Daddy will fight to the end.” Samsung Electronics made a formal apology on Nov. 23 to all victims of work-related diseases that were employed on the chip and display production lines.
Samsung’s apology was made for the first time in 11 years since Hwang Yu-mi died of leukemia after working for the company’s liquid-crystal display production line in 2007. Since her death, her father, Hwang Sang-ki, requested Samsung to take measures to prevent violations of workers’ rights. He set up an organization: the group of 53 victims named Supporters for the Health and Rights of People in the Semiconductor industry. Ending the 11-year dispute, Samsung pledged financial compensation for all of the victims of work-related diseases who became sick after working at the company’s semiconductor division and admitted that it had overlooked the potential health risks. It will also post an apology on its homepage by the end of November.
However, Hwang expressed disappointment toward the apology as not being sufficient for the victims. He said, “There are also ailing workers from Samsung Electro-Mechanics, SDS, SDI, and other affiliates. I hope Samsung prepares a comprehensive compensation package for all workers suffering from work related diseases.”
Eggs easily break, even at the slightest impact. On the other hand, rocks are impenetrable, even when hammered. Nevertheless, there are endless trials to hit a rock with eggs. Moreover, some of these attempts ended successfully in the favor of victims, creating a fracture in the rock. Parker J. Plamer, a social activist, stated in his book, The Politics of the Brokenhearted, that democracy moves forward when the brokenhearted feel fatigued, or when ordinary people challenge the status-quo. Even though people’s heart have been broken, through their desperate efforts, history was able to move forward.
