As the sweltering summer days close, how did you spend your vacation? Did you know that one of the ways Koreans escape the heat is by enjoying natural valleys? As Pohang is widely known for its beautiful coastlines, its valleys remain relatively undiscovered. However, it actually boasts some beautiful, hidden spots. I recently explored one of them with my friends, and it was an unforgettable vacation I would love to share. Perhaps you might consider planning your next summer getaway here!
Haok Valley is located in the northern part of Pohang. It takes 90 minutes to get there POSTECH by car. Although the weather forecast predicted rain for the entire weekend, the sky began to clear up as soon as we set off, and eventually, we could see a blue, cloudless sky. As we drove about 30 minutes out of the city, the urban landscape gave way to winding mountain roads, signaling the official start of our vacation. Everywhere we looked, we were surrounded by lush green fields and mountains. Despite the absence of wind and the intense heat outside, we enjoyed the journey from the cool comfort of our car. Along the way, we stumbled upon a quaint café selling natural flower tea, as well as stalls offering freshly picked peaches. Both were exquisite—definitely worth a stop if you want to add something special to your vacation.
Crossing the first mountain and entering the second, we were finally greeted by a breathtaking natural spectacle. Some people had already arrived, splashing around in the water. Though we were eager to join in, we decided to drive a little further up the mountain, knowing that the best spot for us would be found deeper in the valley, where the water is clearer and the current is stronger. When we finally arrived at our destination, there was a cozy pension with a lush green lawn. Without wasting any time, we inflated the tubes and dashed towards the water. The weather was so hot that we did not hesitate for a moment to plunge into the cool, refreshing stream. To our delight, there was a small but high waterfall right in front of us, providing a powerful cascade that washed away any remnants of summer heat.
Each of us found our way to enjoy the valley. Some of us floated on the tube, basking in the sun along with the gentle current. Others rode natural water slides on the moss-covered rocks. Also, in the crystal-clear stream, we tried catching shellfish. At times, we splashed around as if it was our last day, while at other moments, we relaxed as if we had all the time in the world, surrendering ourselves to the tranquil surroundings. Friends blew soap bubbles that danced on the wind, soaring high. It was a day we wished could last forever. Until the sun began to set behind the towering mountains, we continued to savor every moment, one that will remain etched in our memories for a long time. After our fun in the water, we had a barbecue dinner. Having dinner while listening to the sound of the flowing stream was another highlight. Later that night, we indulged in a cold watermelon Hwachae. Indeed, no summer holiday is complete without good food!
The next day, as we headed back to school, the road was mostly downhill. As we wound our way down the mountain, the East Sea suddenly came into view, far off in the distance. The sight of the blue sea meeting the horizon elicited gasps of awe from everyone in the car. The stunning panorama, where the sky met the sea in a seamless blend, left a deep impression, opening up our hearts and minds to the beauty of nature.
I hope this article has conveyed the unique charm of a valley vacation, and I wish you a refreshing end to the summer season.
