On Nov. 22, POSTECH made a contract with Samsung Electronics to establish the Department of Semiconductor Engineering (name not yet determined). President Moo Hwan Kim and Choi Si-young, president and general manager of the foundry business of Samsung Electronics, signed the contract via a non-face-to-face meeting.
The Department of Semiconductor Engineering will be a semiconductor specialized education institute for the selected few. According to the contract, the Department of Semiconductor Engineering will admit 40 students every year for five years from 2023 to 2027, under the condition that they will be employed at Samsung Electronics after graduation. The department will also allow the students to attend graduate school, taking advantage of POSTECH’s excellent education and research environment.
After completing POSTECH’s basic curriculum for freshmen, the students of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering will take courses on semiconductor design, materials, process, devices, and software to become professionals in the semiconductor field. Students of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering will receive full tuition and special scholarships. The Department of Semiconductor Engineering will run educational programs, such as participation in overseas conferences, available for all students of the department who wish to become global talents.
President Moo Hwan Kim said, “POSTECH, a university that has strengths in educating a small number of selected students and in conducting innovative research, aims to cultivate the best human resources in the semiconductor field through cooperation with Samsung Electronics, a company leading the semiconductor industry.” He also added, “We hope that the graduates of POSTECH will lead the world’s semiconductor industry.”
Meanwhile, POSTECH and Samsung Electronics have been running the POSTECH-SAMSUNG Semiconductor Education Program for graduate school students since 2018.
