POSTECH-CATHOLIC Biomedical Engineering Institute (PCBMI), which is the first Korean joint research center between universities progressed in lung cancer treatment.
The team of Professor Sung, Young-chul (LIFE) and Prof. Jeun, Sin-Soo, from Catholic University of Korea, School of Medicine, have successfully used mesenchymal stem cells to completely remove metastases cancer cells in a mouse’s lung.
After the team had synthesized the mesenchymal stem cells to secrete HSV-TK gene, which makes cells self-destruct, and dodecame trail genes, which selectively eliminate cancer cells, it injected the mouse with the stem cells.
It was observed that the stem cells moved towards the area that held the cancer cells. The overall result was that an increase in protection against cancer cells occurred. By the third dose, all the metastatic tumor cells in the lung were completely removed.
