Smart Healthcare Contact Lenses to Be Commercialized
[387호] 2017년 09월 06일 (수) Reporter Lee Jun-yong .
The smart healthcare contact lens that Professor Hahn Sei-kwang (MSE), Keum Do-hee (MSE Ph.D. candidate), and professor Sim Jae-yoon (EEE) developed will be commercialized. Normally, blood is drawn and analyzed to diagnose diabetes, but it is difficult to analyze continuous changes. Google and Novartis are researching a method by analyzing the glucose concentration in tears, but the concentration in body fluids doesn’t reflect that of the blood real-time. The research team developed a new system for their lenses, which uses the veins on the eye and eyelids. The micro-LEDs and photodetectors analyze the glycated hemoglobin in the veins when the user closes his or her eyes, and determines the glucose concentration. They are also working on treatment too, inserting medication through the eye.
