Don Bernard Zagier, one of the four directors of Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Mathematics, was appointed as a distinguished professor at POSTECH.
Prof. Don Bernard Zagier has demonstrated his prodigious talent for academics since his youth. Finishing high school education at the age of thirteen, he earned his bachelor’s degree for mathematics and physics at MIT at the age of sixteen, and received his Ph.D. for mathematics at the University of Oxford at the age of twenty. He has held office as a professor in University of Bonn since 1976 and served as the directors of MPI for Mathematics since 1955. He is widely known as the expert of number theory.
Prof. Don Bernard Zagier was invited to give lectures at POSTECH in 1992 and 2012; this is his third visit. After he finished his lectures in 2012, he remarked that it was impressive to see students understand lectures in English to a certain extent and even react to some jokes. Prof. Don Zagier will be giving intensive lectures on mathematics and its application in physics from April 1 to May 12, mainly for graduate students in the Department of Mathematics.
