A quantum dot is currently being used in semiconductors, displ- ays, optical sensors, medical products and other various fields. Despite its usefulness, this material has many drawbacks. The biggest one is its band gap, which determines electro conductive characteristics. Unlike most research focused on chemical ways to control band gap, a national research team has developed a control technology by using mechanical way.
With Professor Jang Hyun Myung (MSE), Joo soo hyun (Center for Advanced Aerospace Materials researcher), Park Hyun Jin (The National Institute for Nanotechnology researcher) and Kong Eui Hyun (MSE Ph.D.) have developed a method of controlling a band gap by inducing residual stress to a quantum dot. This transforms the lattice. The result was published in Small, a well-known journal in the materials field. The application of Finite Elements Method to quantum dots to predict the transformation of lattice was regarded as a fresh approach.
Known as an energy gap, a band gap means differentiation of energy level. The differentiation determines the electro conductive characteristics. The use of mechanical controls of a band gap is also able to lower the production cost.
