The research team tested 40 people. By cognition test, the volunteers were subject to experience about 80 vibration harmonies. The team then analyzed and measured the tendency of people’s perceptions of consonance. Using the results, they found that the beat frequency of the vibration was deeply related to consonance, which has similar perceptions to consonance in music. As the beat frequency gets lower, consonance gets lowered as well and vice versa.
This research is meaningful because it suggests consonance measures the degree of harmony on haptic stimulation. This research can be applied in several smart apparatuses using vibrations to deliver information.
