Professor Moo Hwan Kim (ME), who also works in the Division of Advanced Nuclear Engineering (DANE), was elected as the tenth Director of the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), an independent regulatory expert organization that supports the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission in licensing and regulation of nuclear facilities and related activities. His inaugural ceremony was held on Oct. 2, and his term lasts three years. KINS envisions its institute to become “the ‘heart of global nuclear safety’ trusted by the world by being committed to nuclear safety with the best expertise and leadership.” Its code of conduct is “WEACT,” meaning with We, Excellency, Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency. In essence, KINS’s mission is “to protect the public and preserve the environment from radiological disasters caused by the production or use of nuclear energy.”
Prof. Kim earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at SNU in Nuclear Engineering, and earned his Ph.D. at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison in Nuclear Engineering. For 27 years, he has worked at POSTECH both as a professor and as a researcher. In addition, he was also a member of Nuclear Safety and Security Commission? Committee of Nuclear Safety, from the organization of National Research Foundation of Korea. At his inaugural ceremony, he claimed, “safety related to atomic energy and radioactivity is an incomparable value” and “in order to achieve this, the regulation’s values and standards will be reestablished, and I will work hard to create a professional organization that is based on collaboration.”
