Like Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s, and Alz-heimer’s, the Huntington’s disease is a typical degenerative cranial nerve disorder that affects five to ten of every 10,000 people. Huntington’s disease has symptoms like chorea, psychiatric symptom, dementia, and is well known as a non-treatable disease. However, a treatment for this Huntington’s disease was developed by a research team at POSTECH.
Using trehalose, a disaccharide that exists in nature, and independently developed technology about drug delivery vector, the research team of Professor Emeritus Sung-Kee Chung (CHEM) and team of Prof. Kyong-Tai Kim (LIFE) succeed in developing treatment, which removes disease-causing protein by passing through blood-brain barrier.
This result is in the February issue of Medicinal Chemistry Commu-nications by Royal Society of Chemistry, expected to make a turning point in the treatment of Huntington’s disease, and be applied to treatment for other degenerative cranial nerve di-sorders.
