“Mathematics is the queen of the sciences and number theory the queen of mathematics” said Gauss, renowned mathematician of 19th century. Like this sentence, many mathematicians who majored in number theory gathered in POSTECH for ILJU math school. This math school has been held at POSTECH mathematics department for 4 years. This year, ILJU math school selected ‘number theory’ also subtitled ‘theta festival.’

For this ‘theta festival,’ Shin Sug-woo, who is an assistant mathematics professor of MIT played a leading role. People often call him ‘closest Korean of Fields award’. He and other number theory researchers who majored in ‘Theta correspondence’ announced their cutting edge production of their studies to graduate students. Even if the students couldn’t understand the lecture, they could practice the newest information of number theory. These experiences could motivate graduate student curiosity.

In particular this year, Wee Teck Gan, Atsushi Ichino, Yifeng Liu and other researchers participated in this ‘Theta Festival.’ They are all young and global mathematicians. Thus, because of many foreign researchers, theta festival would be a worldwide ceremony and global mathematics debate field.

The ministry of this ‘theta festival,’ Prof. Choi Young-ju said “This festival will be the debate place and the training center for graduate students and mathematicians.”
