Competition between the most high-profile names in Big Tech has been rekindled over determining who will dominate the next Social Network Service (SNS) market. Meta recently launched Threads, a new SNS countering Twitter, and Threads aggressively engaged users from Instagram. Meta, in 2021, dropped their former name Facebook and expanded their range of business so far as to metaverse, in accordance with the word Meta which means “beyond”. Amidst these actions of Meta, another movement has been detected in Twitter; its name was changed to X after being acquired by Elon Musk, the CEO of X, and he has a plan to construct a super platform embracing various services like messenger or banking, and going beyond mere SNS.
As Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta released Threads in July, Musk commenced to deeply impede the pace of Threads by warning lawsuits about trade secret piracy, and even brought up a “cage fight”. The opinion of X is that Meta recruited developers from X and made a copycat of the Twitter platform, naming it Threads. Considering that Thread aims at Twitter and provides text-based services, Threads is indeed similar to Twitter, but Zuckerberg claimed he did not employ staff from X and there is no legal culpability. This skirmish became a noticeable conflict between the two virtuosos of SNS companies and triggered personal collisions leading to a possible cage fight.
When Threads was first released, many people assessed that it was similar to Twitter and directly aimed at Twitter, yet Threads actually has a goal of outdoing Twitter. Threads showed skyrocketing growth and gathered more than 100 million users in just five days. Forbes analyzed this syndrome as due to the existing discontent about Twitter and the construction of active feeds based on Instagram. On the other hand, X planned their vision of cultivating a super app which covers shopping, messaging, and so forth, and undertook wholescale reformation, being aware of Threads. Meta is recording new progress after Instagram, but X rapidly chases Threads, and it is unknown who will occupy the next-generation competitive edge.
Current SNSs have filled our screen with short-forms over the past few years, and there also have been voices about the deleteriousness of that. As Threads did, text-based SNS starts to be reconsidered and gleams in the big match of Meta and X along with the blueprint of a super platform. Above all, it is expected that the diastrophism in the SNS market would be stimulated as if Threads was developed in just half a year.
