In a bid to improve safety, address environmental concerns, and promote sustainability, POSTECH has announced an ambitious remodeling project that includes the replacement of the aging deck and upgrades to the sewage and electrical facilities. This significant endeavor aims to transform the environment, ensuring a safer and more pleasant experience for students, staff, and visitors. The Postech Times interviewed the facility operation team to report the remodeling plan.
The primary focus of the remodeling project revolves around Jigok Pond. The pond has been plagued by an unpleasant smell emanating from a blocked coriander pipe, which led to the decision to overhaul the entire area. Recognizing the urgency of the issue, the administration has taken a proactive approach, working towards a comprehensive solution. Main component of the project involves replacing the aging deck that spans over the sewage pipe. This measure not only ensures the safety of those using the deck but also allows for the simultaneous replacement of the underlying sewage pipe. By tackling both issues concurrently, POSTECH aims to streamline the renovation process, minimizing disruption and maximizing efficiency.
However, the remodeling work for Jigok Pond has encountered a slight delay. Due to unforeseen technical challenges discovered during the initial stages of the project, the completion timeline has been extended. The administration assures the community that every effort is being made to expedite the process while ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.
Furthermore, the administration has also identified the need for electrical facility upgrades. Outdated electrical systems within the North Pohang substation will be replaced to address reliability issues and prevent potential power outages. Collaborative discussions with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) are underway to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to the operations.
Recognizing the importance of sustainability and energy conservation, POSTECH is promoting initiatives to save energy. One such measure involves the installation of individual air conditioning and heating systems, eliminating the need for a centralized supply. By doing so, POSTECH anticipates saving energy significantly more, particularly compared to the previous system in student halls.
The remodeling project also emphasizes the importance of community engagement. Members of the community are encouraged to report any facility-related issues promptly. The administration assures that all reported concerns will be addressed promptly, with a visit from maintenance staff typically occurring within two days. This open communication channel serves as a vital tool in identifying and rectifying any ongoing facility-related challenges.
Ultimately, POSTECH is embarking on an extensive remodeling project aimed at revitalizing Jigok Pond and upgrading campus facilities. While a slight delay has been encountered in the Jigok Pond remodeling work, the administration remains committed to completing the project efficiently and to the highest standards. Through the replacement of the aging deck, improvements to the sewage and electrical infrastructure, and an emphasis on energy conservation, they seek to create a safer, more sustainable, and pleasant environment for all. The administration encourages active participation from the community and looks forward to the positive impact these changes will have on the overall POSTECH experience.
