Postechians’ special attention is required because of a rapidly spreading ransomware that encrypts HWP. Ransomware is computer malware that is installed covertly on a victim's device. It either makes the victim's data unavailable and holds it as a hostage or threatens to publish the victim's data, unless a ransom is paid. Since there are a lot of important administrative documents written in HWP format, large damage is expected if ransomware infects computers in POSTECH. According to the Office of Academic Information Affairs, “Windows System Protection Settings” can help prevent ransomware infection. It is the only way to restore the computer after infection without any other backup. In this case, setting up a restore point is mandatory after protection setting. Also, there is a webpage, https://www.nomoreransom.org/, run by foreign companies in order to prevent damage dealt by ransomware. It offers a decryption tool that can unbrick and delete the installed ransomware. For additional help related to ransomware, make an inquiry to Information and Communication Services through E-mail (hemos@postech.ac.kr) or telephone, 054-279-2514.
