Recently, Korea’s democracy has been decaying because of the affairs related to high-ranking officials including even President Park Geun-hye. As the leader of a representative democracy, President Park was elected by a vote, and consequently, given the power and responsibility to represent the voice of the people. However, the president discolored the meaning of democracy. The president disclosed several speech drafts that should have classified to a woman named Choi Soon-sil. She is also suspected to give Choi other extremely sensitive classified information. The president eventually admitted the fact that she handed over the scripts of speech to Choi, and apologized to Korean citizens.
The people of Korea have criticized what the president has done, and urged her to solve the problems and punish the related person. Many universities, including Seoul National University, So-Gang University, Pusan University, have written a declaration of the state of affairs, which expresses the seriousness of national and social problems and the necessity of their solution.
Similar opinions by Postechians were expressed through platforms like Facebook, Povis, etc. Student council collected the opinions of Postechians from Oct. 26 to Oct. 28 and held a meeting on Oct. 28 to determine how POSTECH would respond. As a result, and for the first time, POSTECH decided to participate in the declaration of the state of affairs. Considering a previous experience when the National Intelligence Service Korea intervened in the election, POSTECH students overwhelmingly agreed with expressing the seriousness of this to the nation. A public reading for the declaration was held on Oct. 31.
POSTECH Student Union presented a declaration of the state of affairs with the contents below; it is a part of the declaration. “Korea is a democratic republic. All of the sovereign power is from the people and the vote. Through the vote, Korea elected President Park, and the people believed that they gave the power to President Park. However, the president has delivered the power to a normal person and made a question whether Korea is a democratic republic. Also, unfamiliar foundations received preferential treatment to the nation with the name of President Park, received bribe from companies, and sent them to companies of Choi. About this, called ‘Choi Soon-sil gate,’ POSTECH students press for investigating all the relative people, and punishing them.”
