While scrolling down Shorts, one commonly sees videos made with generative artificial intelligence. The most common example of GenAI used in the content-creation process is text-to-speech (TTS) GenAI, where you can narrate your content by simply typing the sentences you want to narrate. With the help of TTS, you can now make a clean and sharp narration without buying expensive microphones. Another example of GenAI frequently used in content creation is an AI voice generator, used for making covers of an artist’s songs with another artist’s voice. Even video editing is done by GenAI, easily shortening the video to short-form videos and adding captions. Content related to GenAI, such as the challenges of distinguishing AI from human-made art, are also the result of GenAI’s penetration into our lives. As you can see, GenAI is not something out of reach anymore, but something that has taken its own place in our society.

The increase in variety may contribute to better quality and higher abundance of video content, but within this there also exists a trail of maleficent content. Just as recently as last month, in the run-up to the U.S. Presidential Election campaigns, DeepFake Biden and Trump flooded social media, spreading fake news to voters. This fake news brought chaos and confusion to the election campaigns, obstructing eligible voters from making sensible decisions. Another problem factoring in the digital characteristics of GenAI content is that these maleficent videos are almost impossible to control after they are uploaded. DeepFake videos are spread with uncontrollable speed and put their victims through long and unrelenting pain.

It has been a mere six years since DeepFake technology was introduced, but it has influenced our society in every area, from culture to politics. New technologies are introduced to us every day, and most of those with easy access have extraordinary benefits as well as a good influence on our society, making it richer and more colorful. But without deeply thought-out discussions of what these technologies could bring, however convenient and useful the technology may be, it cannot do the good it is supposed to and may bring more harm.
