From Dec. 4 to Dec. 13, POSTECH sent students to the Nobel Week 2023, as a “Nobel Week 2023 POSTECH Student Delegation.” Nobel Week is a global event held annually by the Nobel Foundation in conjunction with the Nobel Prize Awards. This year, various events such as Nobel Prize-related exhibitions, lectures, and discussions by Nobel laureates are held. In addition to participating in Nobel Week, POSTECH also conducted a program to visit nearby sister universities and research institutes. This year, in addition to taking Nobel Prize-winning lectures, students visited Uppsala University, Chalmers University, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and the Max Planck Institute, as well as networking with alumni working in Europe.
“Nobel Week 2023 POSTECH Student Delegation” was designed to instill a vision that Postechians could become a future Nobel laureate. This program was implemented for the first time this year to encourage students to design their future on the world stage and grow into global talents. Student Affairs introduced the purpose of this program as follows. First, to inspire undergraduate students to dream of future Nobel laureates by giving them the opportunity to experience global scientific events linked to the Nobel Prize ceremony. Second, to realize POSTECH’s unique value of “university both open inside and outside” and to help students design their future on the world stage. Third, to raise awareness as a “Global Postecian” by providing a venue for meetings with alumni active on the world stage.
Meanwhile, POSTECH will provide with the opportunity to choose between the two big events, CES and Nobel Week annually. Through these overseas events, POSTECH intends to realize POSTECH’s unique value of “university open both inside and outside” mentioned in the President’s inaugural address and to help Postechians design their future on the world stage. In particular, Nobel Week is expected to be attractive to students in departments directly related to Nobel Prize-winning fields such as physics, chemistry, and life sciences.
Students who participated in the event generally responded positively. Although there were some unexpected issues such as flight cancellations, they were satisfied in that they could explore the wide world off-campus. Song Yu-ri (LIFE 20), an attendee said, “It was nice to have a rare experience of seeing this year’s Nobel Prize winners in person, and above all, it was meaningful to have a wider perspective while visiting various overseas research institutes with alumni.”
Jongwoo Je, officer of Student Affairs said, “Based on the feedback from the students in the contingent, we would like to prepare a more colorful program, so please look forward to it.” He added, “I hope you do not apply for simple travel purposes. I hope that the students who have a clear sense of purpose about what they want to gain through Nobel Week will apply.”
