Nowadays, a lot of movies are newly released, and plenty of movies are easy to find in everyday life. We now watch movies not only in theaters but in our homes with our mobile devices. However, are we fully watching the movies? A single movie contains much more information than one could imagine, and some of them go unnoticed throughout the movie. I understood this during my summer sessions. For my summer session, I took a class called “Understanding of the Film.” In this lecture we learned about the basics of movies and films, how they developed into the movies we know today, and what skills are used to make movies rich in quality. After taking this class, I figured that there is much more to the movie than what meets the eye. There are many hidden features that the movie director takes into account to enrich the movie’s quality. So today, I would like to share my opinion on how to fully watch a movie.
Movies are either a figment of imagination created by the director or a story based on an existing novel, or even based on a true story. Either way, the director’s views and thoughts are projected in their movie. Because of this, it is essential to understand the director’s thoughts to appreciate the the movie in its entirety. There are many ways a director influences a movie, but today I will share a technique related specifically to filming.
When filming, the cameraman operates the camera. Just understanding how the shot is filmed gives us a glimpse as to what the director is trying to say in the particular scene. For instance, if the camera is filming at a low angle, it emphasizes and makes the character look relatively superior. This naturally makes us focus more on the character, and it emphasizes the importance of the character to the plot. In contrast, if the camera takes a high angle, it makes the character look inferior compared to the other characters in the scene. Other than the angle of the camera, the way that the camera moves while filming, the editing of the movie, and the music inserted in the movie all give different clues as to what the movie is trying to convey to the audience. Although it might be difficult to find and understand all of them, finding just a few techniques while watching the movie could significantly enhance our understanding and appreciation of the movie.
As seen in the examples above, it is clear that the different techniques used while filming help us interpret the movie. However, this does not mean that we have to interpret it just the way it is given. Even though there may already exist an interpretation made by the director, the interpretation of the audience is also important. There is no right answer to the interpretation because each interpretation creates a new perspective. Even if the director has a fixed thought about the movie, it doesn’t mean that it is the right one. The diverse interpretations recreated by the audience are what complete the movie. Even so, if we can interpret the director’s thoughts, we could reinforce our thoughts on the movie by either agreeing or partly disagreeing with the given interpretation. Thus we need the skill to catch what the director is trying to say in a particular scene. If we can succeed in doing so, it will be possible to exceed the original and think beyond expectations.
