What is your favorite type of superhero? The brick that smashes everything? Or a mentalist who controls the minds of people? Among many types of superheroes, a speedster who moves with superhuman speed is certainly the beloved hero in every superhero movie. In modern society, where people are busier than ever to work at a job, enjoy leisure, and consume content, people seem to need a speedster’s ability to finish tasks at high speed. Although people cannot have the superpower to move and think faster than the human limit, they have the technology to help them save time when watching videos. On video platforms, 1.5x speed or sometimes 2x speed allows users to watch videos faster.
Recently, video content has been in all areas, like social media, marketing, and streaming services. Hence, people have an overwhelming number of videos to watch, ranging from YouTube, TikTok, and Netflix. Yet, people are already so occupied that they cannot consume all the videos pouring out. As a result, people are choosing to watch videos in a shorter amount of time. Some videos even summarize movies in 10-20 minutes, and they get decent views. At this point, however, a question arises. Why do people these days have to watch so much more video content?
A possible answer to the question can be found in the structure of social media. Due to social media, people are connected to friends, influencers, and celebrities all the time, and things go viral quickly and disappear a few weeks later. To stay connected with friends and follow the trend, people must watch new viral videos and popular movies. Since people do not have enough time to spend wholly on a single video, they are choosing to watch summary videos and those at 2x speed as an alternative.
Additionally, there are analyses that people are dopamine addicted and cannot stop watching. To target individual users, social media platforms have applied recommendation systems. Recent studies show that personalized videos trigger the brain’s reward center, reinforcing the users to continue watching more videos. On top of that, after a certain period, the brain needs greater stimulus to release the same amount of dopamine. Then, people soon feel bored watching longer videos and crave shorter videos. As a result, people might watch videos at 2x speed to consume more videos in the same period. Otherwise, people turn to shorter forms of videos, such as TikTok videos and Instagram reels, where they can have more events for the same duration.
Unaware, videos have made their way deep into people’s everyday lives. Videos are the means to acquire information, to spend free time, and to connect with people. However, the increasing need for more video consumption has led to the popularity of watching videos at 1.5x or 2x speeds and even opting for shorter, summarized content. The addictive nature of personalized videos and the pursuit of constant novelty further reinforces this trend. As technology advances and our lives become increasingly fast-paced, the need to adapt and find ways to consume content more efficiently may persist. Nevertheless, it is essential to balance consuming content and allowing ourselves moments of relaxation and genuine engagement with the media we choose to watch. By being mindful of our media consumption habits, we can make informed decisions about how we use technology to enhance our lives without compromising the enjoyment of meaningful content.
