POSTECH Buddy, an organization that leads communications with foreign exchange students, has started anew under the name of PBUD. The pronunciation of PBUD is similar to the English word pivot, which implies that the purpose of this organization is to be at the center of foreign exchange students’ POSTECH life, the globalization of POSTECH, and exchanges between Postechians and foreign exchange students. In addition, the pronunciation of BUD is like a friend in Korean, so it suggests a budding friendship between Postechians and foreign students.
PBUD aims to help foreign exchange students adapt to Korean life early, and further instill a positive impression of POSTECH and Korea through active interaction between Postechians and foreigners. Based on this, the organization is also planning to lead the globalization of POSTECH and promote POSTECH to leading universities abroad. To this end, PBUD continues to exchange Korean culture every semester through team matching between exchange students and Buddy (PBUD members), participation in the Dormitory for International Culture Exchange (DICE) Membership Training, and travel to local places in Pohang and nearby Gyeongju. In the future, PBUD plans to collaborate with school clubs and translate posts for foreigners at various events, including the POSTECH-KAIST Science War. PBUD’s goal is to do its best to become a foreign-friendly university suitable for POSTECH, which aims for a bilingual campus.
In addition to the friendship promotion, PBUD has plans to conduct guidance and promotional activities at the school when representatives from overseas universities visit POSTECH. PBUD also announced that Buddy plans to further develop English conversation skills through a camp during the vacation and greet exchange students who will come to the school a week before the start of the semester. PBUD members will show that they work hard during the vacation through social events with foreign exchange students.
Joe Sung-hyun, chairman of PBUD, explained what he felt through PBUD activities over the past year. “The reason I joined the PBUD was because I thought it was the best opportunity to meet foreign exchange students, and through this, I could develop my English conversation skills. Although I lacked a lot of conversation skills in English, I was able to achieve my goal with the help of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS staff and the Buddy around me. It was good to improve my conversation skills, but the best thing was that I was able to get close to and talk to various people. It was so meaningful to meet people who have lived in different cultures, talk about various topics, introduce each other’s culture, and learn it one by one.” It is expected that the PBUD’s goal of creating global POSTECH through various activities with foreign exchange students will be achieved in the future.
