On Aug. 23, the renovation of the first floor of the Tae-Joon Park Library was completed. The GS25 library convenience store and the Coffee Nearme library café on the first floor of the Tae-Joon Park Library opened their doors for business on July 20 and Aug. 24, respectively. The Postech Times contacted Joo Sang Lee, director of the POSTECH Food Services, for exact information on the renovation of the first floor. The convenience store and the cafe were opened for the convenience of any Postechians and citizens visiting the library. The cafeteria on the sixth floor was removed during the renovation, so improved facilities were placed on the first floor. “We hope Postechians will use the first floor as a resting and eating area. Since the first floor is open to the public, Postechians can communicate with citizens visiting the Tae-Joon Park Library”, said director Lee.
The Postech Times contacted Soo-Ahn Han, director of the Academic Information Resources Team, for accurate information on the renovation. The second floor of the library will undergo renovations until Nov. 30. The overall concept of the second floor is “a library embracing both Postechians and citizens”. The second floor will be completely open to citizens as a space for resting and communicating. “We hope that Postechians make great use of the second floor, since they are the main users of the Tae-Joon Park Library”, said director Han. The second floor contains the Welcome Center, a Historical Museum, the Academic Information Resources Team office, bookshelves, and a terrace.
The Welcome Center houses the Admissions Team and the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) to interact more effectively with both Postechians and citizens. “The Admissions Team gained both security and accessibility by separating the work and counseling spaces”, said Hwang Sumin of the Admissions Team. In the half-opened counseling space, both offline and online consulting will be held for students who wish to enter POSTECH. The ISSS is completely open to any Postechian who need services related to studying overseas or visas. The Historical Museum will be opened on Nov. 30, introducing 35 years of POSTECH from its establishment to its future plans. The Historical Museum will foster pride and help Postechians inherit the establishing principles of POSTECH. The bookshelves will contain magazines, DVDs, and recommended/theme books. Cozy stools and sofas are placed for reading and having small discussions. The terrace has also been renovated as a comfortable space for rest and leisure.
There are several ongoing renovation plans for the Tae-Joon Park Library. On the third and fourth floor’s POCUS zones, an individual heating and cooling system will be installed for Postechians’ comfortable use of the library. The main elevator of the library will also be renovated. Additionally, extra security gates will be installed in front of the elevator and the central stairs of the second floor to avoid citizens from entering the higher floors of the library—which are exclusively for Postechians.
