Due to COVID-19, most of this year’s university admissions interviews will be held non-Face-to-Face. There are three main ways to conduct non-Face-to-Face admissions interviews. The first is asking the applicant to upload a video of him or herself answering interview questions that are released in advance. The second is recording in the field; at a specified date and place, the applicant answers questions under the instructions of a supervisor, and the answers are recorded and submitted. Lastly, real-time video interviews are conducted using a video conference program on the interview date.
For the first time, POSTECH plans to hold real-time video interviews from Dec. 5 to 7. The interview platform will be provided by an external company. To minimize the risk of problems occurring during an interview, the admission team will evaluate potential access errors in online meetings in advance. Nevertheless, if an unexpected situation arises during an interview, the interview will continue through a video call using the student’s smartphone or will be postponed. The official interview dates are Dec. 5 and 6, but additional interviews may take place on Dec. 7 in case of unforeseen circumstances.
So far, POSTECH’s admissions interview was divided into two parts: “Thinking Skills Interview” and “Potentiality Interview”. In the Thinking Skills Interview, all applicants are presented with the same article and are asked the same question. Students are asked an open-ended question to evaluate their creativity, rather than a question that requires mathematical or scientific knowledge. In the Potentiality Interview, the interviewers ask questions tailored to each student based on his or her submitted documents (student records, teacher recommendations, personal statement, and so on). Unlike in previous years, the Thinking Skills interview will not be conducted, and students will be assessed on their performance in the Potentiality Interview only. Son Sung-ik, head of  Admissions, explained that the university is not holding the Thinking Skills interview, because “there may be a possibility of unfairness or cheating depending on when the interview is held” as the interview period is extended over two days.
Specific details regarding the admission interview will be provided to the candidates after the evaluation of submitted documents. The interview consists of 15 minutes of waiting time and 10 minutes of interview time. Applicants should prepare a desktop computer or a laptop with a webcam and a microphone in a location with a stable Wi-Fi or wired network. The university recommends wearing earphones or a headset, and interviewees should be on standby alone in an isolated interview location.
Meanwhile, an online event regarding the interview will be held on Dec. 4, the day before the interview. This event is for the applicants and their parents. Not only will the event deliver precautions for the interview to the applicants, but there will also be messages of support from POSTECH students and alumni. The event will also include an introduction to POSTECH by Alimi, the student promotion group, and a talk show participated by various people, such as President Moo Hwan Kim, admissions officers, and professors. The event will be broadcasted live through both Zoom and YouTube.
