Have you ever thought about what a university is truly for? Answers might vary widely—from a place for group activities or meeting new people, to preparing for employment. Indeed, in South Korea, there is a strong perception that university serves as a preparatory step before entering society. However, the core purpose of a university is fundamentally about independently seeking out what one wishes or needs to learn, and nurturing one’s personal growth.

POSTECH, recognized as one of the world’s leading universities, offers an optimal environment for achieving these educational goals. Most students initially enter through the “Department of Muenjae School of Undergraduate Studies,” exploring various fields freely before finally choosing their major after sufficient consideration. An especially remarkable aspect is that all courses offered at POSTECH are open to every student, regardless of their major. Students have the freedom to enroll in any class they desire, and, up until graduation, they can switch majors, pursue double majors, or take minors whenever they wish.

In my case, I had not initially considered my current major. When I first enrolled, I aimed to major in Materials Science and Engineering. As my studies progressed, I developed an interest in deeper fundamental sciences, leading me to take many Chemistry courses. Then, one day, I unexpectedly discovered interest and joy in an Electronics class I took by chance, following a friend’s suggestion. This newfound interest marked a significant turning point in my university life. Initially sparked by simple curiosity, I soon realized that this was a field I genuinely wanted to delve into more deeply. Afterward, I freely explored courses outside the boundaries of my department, gaining valuable knowledge in advanced mathematics and computer science, which allowed me to sense the increasingly blurred boundaries among these disciplines.

The greatest realization from studying three majors simultaneously has been that actively utilizing the free and open environment provided by the university enables students to transcend traditional academic boundaries and cultivate their unique areas of expertise. Many view universities merely as a way to acquire a degree or as stepping-stones toward employment. However, university life is a precious opportunity to discover fields one is genuinely passionate about and to creatively integrate and develop these interests.

Choosing multiple majors, especially three is certainly not an easy task. It requires effective time management, efficient learning strategies, and even mental resilience to overcome unexpected challenges. Nevertheless, the rewards gained from this journey are beyond imagination. Knowledge from each major complements and strengthens the others, producing innovative ideas and immeasurable satisfaction when you create something entirely new.

My most crucial advice to you, the reader and fellow students, is to remain open-minded and actively explore diverse fields during your university years. It is perfectly fine if you don’t have clear goals from the beginning. Just as I experienced, a course you accidentally encounter or one suggested by a friend could alter your life’s direction completely. If you feel drawn toward a certain field, courageously try it, and don’t hesitate to consider double majors or minors. Embrace the open environment that the university provides to discover and nurture your unique expertise.
