Maestro Gum Nanse is one of Korea’s most prominent conductors, known for his innovative approach to classical music. Over the years, he has conducted numerous orchestras, founded the New World Philharmonic Orchestra, and pioneered a new form of music education. Now, as the Honors Professor of POSTECH’s Division of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and a part of “Gum Nanse Music Concert” program, Prof. Gum plans to foster a harmony of music, science, and creativity for Postechians here at POSTECH.

The catalyst behind Prof. Gum’s appointment to POSTECH

Prof. Gum’s appointment derived from a special connection established last year. “I had performed several concerts at POSTECH, including a special event for the inauguration of President Kim. The concert was very successful, with a fully packed 1,500-seat hall,” he recalled. Impressed by Postechians’ enthusiasm towards music, Prof. Gum found common ground with the President, who understood its transformative power. “The President believed the integration of music and science could enhance scientific innovation and contribute to students’ achievements, like the Nobel Prize,” he shared with a smile.

For Prof. Gum, the invitation to join POSTECH was a new challenge. “I have always been drawn to innovation,” he said. “Whether it’s founding a venture orchestra or introducing new concepts for music concerts, I seek to converge various fields together.” The New World Philharmonic Orchestra is a clear example, converging entrepreneurial components with the traditional orchestra format, setting it apart from conventional orchestras.

From Maestro to Professor

Prof. Gum’s plan for POSTECH is not limited to performing. He envisions conducting master classes, interactive seminars, and lectures as a professor of HSS; introducing to Postechians how music can bring interdisciplinary harmony between art and science. “It is not just about playing music. It is about encouraging communication and inspiring students to think creatively,” he said.

Prof. Gum sees his role at POSTECH as an opportunity to contribute to the nurturing of future innovators of the world. He believes that music can play a crucial role in growing Postechians who excel not only in academics but also in their intention to contribute to society. “It is important that one is not solely focused on success. One must be equipped with their own philosophy and understanding how one’s work impacts the world,” he explained. Prof. Gum hopes his efforts will help Postechians expand their perspectives, blending their scientific expertise with artistic sensibility to achieve innovation that contributes to others. “I hope that music plays a part in that journey,” he added.

“Music and science are more connected than they seem,” he remarked. “By merging these fields, we can discover new directions for creativity and innovation.” Through his dedication to both performance and education, Prof. Gum continues to inspire, proving that music has the power to transcend boundaries and shape the future.
