Director Kim Ki-moon’s team (Institute for Basic Science) and Professor Oh Joon-hak’s team (CHEM) developed a fast mobile drug detection sensor. If it leads to commercialization, drug detection can be common through drinking control.
The sensor detects the minimum amount of drugs promptly and accurately using a drop of urine, perspiration, or saliva. The area of the sensor is only 1.5cm wide and 3.5cm long, and was devised in the form of a mobile smart band. Linking with a smart phone, the sensor notices the detection results in real time.
The susceptibility of the drug sensor is over 10 thousand times that of the pre-existing mobile analyzer. Based on molecule cognition, it can detect all kinds of amphetamines such as methamphetamine and ecstasy. It can also be modified to a custom sensor response detecting a variety of drugs and existing narcotics. The research team will manufacture the sensor that detects the endocrine-disrupting chemicals or toxic materials using the results of this research.
Prof. Kim remarked, “This result can change the paradigm of drug detection, and will have an impact in Academia and influence society all-around." This research was announced on Chem online on Sep.29.
