When I was in high school, my brother told our family that he contributed an article to the school newspaper and it was published. He was a student in POSTECH, and the newspaper I read was The Postech Times. Now, I have become a new reporter for The Postech Times and I am writing my first column! Even though I am a sophomore, my willingness to write and learn is strong as a freshman. Some people would ask why I didn’t apply last year. To be honest, I had no idea about applying to any clubs or groups, due to the new environment and busy schedule. After getting used to school, I always wanted to belong to a group that I can get along with and work with. When I saw the new recruitment notification for The Postech Times, I thought it was perfect for me, since I had confidence in my English skills, and was fond of writing.
I believe I have quite great English skills, but I am a little bit worried about writing news articles in English. First of all, after entering POSTECH, I did not study English that much, and it has been a long time since I have written in English. Also, writing ordinary articles and news articles is a whole new experience. I have no experience in writing news articles, and to be honest, I was not that big of a fan of newspapers. I was used to reading online news or watching TV news programs. However, after reading the news out of the newspaper, I felt that the newspapers’ legibility was much better. I will read newspapers “a lot” to get used to the form of news articles, and get back to studying English. I was worried about my English skills getting lower due to my idleness in studying English, but working as an English reporter will be a great driving force for me to study English. I believe working as a reporter will benefit both The Postech Times and myself.
There are some worries about starting as a cub reporter during my sophomore year. All the other cub reporters are freshman, and they will probably be uncomfortable with me. I have started one semester later than the others, so they would have to teach or scold me, but they may hesitate because I am older. However, I know that age does not matter, and only experience and ability does. I am ready to learn, and I will ask many questions to be a better reporter. In addition, I will try my best to get along with other reporters as fast as I can, so I hope they do not feel uncomfortable!
Sometimes, I find news articles very hard to read due to difficult vocabulary or terms. Especially in English news, many fellow students will have a hard time. My first priority as a reporter is to use easy English. That way, many students will find it easy to read, and as the writer, I do not have to try making my article look fancy. I am really looking forward to working as a reporter, and grateful to fellow reporters giving me this chance. I will not let you down!
