Professor Lee Jin-woo (CE) has accomplished transforming slag waste into porous silicon which is receiving attention recently as a high value pro-duct, using scores of simple processes. This silicon not only has four times capacity of graphite electrodes, but also has better durability than existing silicon materials. While other components except silicon oxides are easily extracted from slag, the magnesium reduction process is executed along with this removal process, and porous silicon, having a large surface area of several hundred meters squared per gram can be produced. Prof. Lee said “developing porous silicon is a technology that can efficiently deal with industrial waste, and produce batteries at low prices.”
