Professor Ahn Kyo-han’s team (CHEM) and SNU Professor Mook In-hee’s team discovered a new biomarker that shows the progress of Alzheimer’s disease. An enzyme called Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) is closely related to Alzheimer’s disease. The joint research team observed MAO with fine image quality in real time using in vivo two-photon microscopy imaging. They developed the two-photon fluorescence, which can detect beta-amyloid and MAO. According to their research, as Alzheimer’s disease progresses, the amount of amyloid plaque  and MAO increases. It presents the possibility of using MAO as biomarker.
This was recently reported in ACS Central Science, one of the leading journals of American Chemical Society. The research was supported by the Brain Research Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning, and R&D project by Ministry of Health and Welfare, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
