The power outage on Jan. 14 was due to the university’s 154kV Accelerator Receiver Facilities undergoing a preannounced operation for an extra transformer installment and facility improvement with 22kV line protection.
Normally, a power outage occurs only a handful of times a year at POSTECH. The cause ranges from maintenance of electrical supplies in the research area of RIST, to repairing electric power supplies of transformer room in apartments, UPS integration work, etc. The work usually lasts about one to three hours, nine hours at most.
The power outage on Jan. 14 was unprecedented in both the scale and the duration. Power and internet connection was scheduled to be out for 12.5 hours, from 8:00 A.M. to 8:30 P.M., in almost every part of the campus with the exception of places with emergency power supply or an independent generator. However, even after the operation some parts of the campus experienced unstable internet network. It was completely restored on Jan. 23 and reported as a network equipment defect.
