Professor Jong Bong Lee’s team (PHYS) and Professor Richard Fishel’s team at Ohio State University solved a long disputed problem by discovering the mechanism of how the interaction of enzymes corrects the error in the base pairs of DNA. Prof. Lee is the corresponding author.
The joint research team used a single molecule imaging technique that traces the movement of each biomolecule. This result concludes the controversy about DNA mismatch repair system, which has been existed for 30years. The team’s result was published in an advanced online publication of the journal Nature, on Nov 17.
Prof. Lee’s team had published the paper, “MutS switches between two fundamentally distinct clamps during mismatch repair”, in Nature Structural & Molecular Bology, in 2011. Current research identified interaction and operation mechanism of not only MutS protein, but also all proteins involved in the beginning of mismatch repair.
