On Dec. 9, the National Assembly moved to impeach President Park Geun-hye, and the vote for the impeachment stood at 234 yeas and 56 nays among the 300 members of the National Assembly. As a result, President Park loses her rights as a president, and the rights devolve on Prime Minister Hwang Gyo-an.
The accusations against President Park include 11 constitution violations and four violations of criminal law. Among the 11 constitution violations, include a controversy related to Sewol-ferry and the suppression of freedom of speech. About the Sewol-ferry incident, President Park cannot explain what she was doing during seven hours unaccounted for. President Park also required Segye-Ilbo to change the CEO of the press since Segye-Ilbo reported documents related to Jeong Yun-hoi, which violates freedom of speech. Among the four criminal law violations, bribery charges are included.
The final gateway to punish President Park is on the vote of the nine members of the Constitutional Court. If at least six of the nine approve the measure, President Park will be impeached. After six months, the impeachment will be determined.
