POSTECH Professor Kim Chulhong (Creative IT Engineering) and his research team have successfully developed a microscopic system based on photoacoustic/optical interface method by integrating operating microscope and reality augmentation. Their research findings were published in Scientific Report, a sister journal of Nature. This microscopic system provides the user not only the magnified affected area but also biometric data such as cancer, location of blood vessels, and tissue structures, in real time. The research team performed a carcinomectomy and drug injection through needle around the cancer area on a living mouse, demonstrating the usefulness of this approach. Prof. Kim said, “This microscopic system can be utilized in various microsurgeries such as ophthalmology operation and those focused on microvessels.”
