Ferroelectrics can maintain their electrical polarization without an external electric field. Multiferroics have both ferroelectric and magnetic properties. Multiferroics are expected to be applied as a next generation memory device. The high temperature required for production of multiferroics was inhibitory.
Professor Jang Hyun Myung (MSE), Dr.Seungwoo Song  (AMS Ph.D.), and Hyeon Han (MSE Ph.D. candidate) succeed in making multiferroics at room temperature, using thin film of LuFeO3.
The research team brought the two properties together. The team also found these two crystals form a nanostructure between each other and show electrical coupling phenomenon.
The result was announced in Advanced Materials. It was conducted by POSCO’s green science program , the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
