Zeolite is a porous material that is being widely used as catalyst and separator. Nevertheless, it was still deemed a complication to synthesize a desired structure that would perform the needed functions, due to the lack of knowledge on the formations’ designs.
The team of Prof. Suk Bong Hong (CE), Jiho Shin (CE Ph.D.) and researchers brought up a groundbreaking leap in solving the zeolite synthesis problem. With theoretical predictions and computer modeling , they devised virtual designs that would, in real life, expand along the prescribed patterns. Two zeolite structures, by far the most complicated designs, were successfully synthesized employing this technique.
The breakthrough was published via Angewandte Chemie, the globally renowned chemistry journal. Prof. Suk Bong Hong remarked, “This advancement is recognized for showing that a prediction of a zeolite structure can be followed by the synthesis of that design aside from the traditional, chance-dependent methods.”
