POSTECH Participating in 2016 League of Legends Collegiate Battle May

POSTECH is participating in 2016 League of Legends Collegiate Battle May (2016 LCB May), hosted by Riot Games, supervised by Korea e-Sports Association (KeSPA), sponsored by Samsung and Intel, broadcasted and organized by Inven.
League of Legends (LoL) is an online game gaining popularity worldwide. Genre of LoL is Multi Online Battle Arena (MOBA). MOBA is a type of games that 2 teams compete with each other to destroy enemy’s core building, which is called Nexus in LoL. Each team is consisted of 5 players, and each player plays one Champion, which is a game character. Players grow their Champions, kill enemy Champions and monsters which buff up their team. Final goal is to destroy enemy turrets and their Nexus, but there are various ways to achieve the goal: team fights, guerilla, assassination, or sieging. Adequate strategy and tactics, player’s individual skills and teamwork as a team are all required to win the game.
LCB is a competition for amateur college students, playing for their school’s honor. Purpose of LCB is development in participative e-Sports culture, and it has been successfully held for 3 times since 2014.
2016 LCB May is an e-Sports event between representative teams from 8 invited universities, held during May along with university festivals. Invited universities are POSTECH, Chung-Ang University, Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, Hanyang University, Korea University, Kyung Hee University, and KAIST. Each university will select their representative team through single elimination tournament. Total prize pool of the event is 20,000,000 KRW. Winner wins 3,000,000 KRW, and loser receives 2,000,000 KRW.
2015 LCB, which was held last year, was organized in a different way compared to 2016 LCB May. There were no invitations, and every university could participate in preliminary round. There were no POSTECH teams in 2015 LCB Winter in the main event, but there was one POSTECH team, “One Bossam Please”, that passed the preliminary round and participated in the main event. Unfortunately, they were defeated in round of 16 by Kangwon University.
Registration for 2016 LCB May was by Mar. 29, and total 57 teams have registered for the event from eight universities. Preliminary round to select a representative team from each university is on progress, from Apr. 16. to May. 15. Main event will be played in Inven studio or university festivals form May 21 to 25. POSTECH will play against KAIST on May 21.
Only a single team has registered for the event in POSTECH, “KKiiieeng Eeeak.” This team has players from who participated in last year’s POSTECH-KAIST Science War, who defeated KAIST 2:0 with a brilliant performance.
